YOUTH Education Days
In the fall of 1992, NYB gave birth to the idea that educating young people could help recruit new participants into outdoor sports and wildlife conservation. Together with a small group of New York State certified Bowhunter Education Instructors and assistance from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), a program was developed to bring young people from all over the State to these education events.
In the summer of 1993, the very first event was held at Turkey Trot Acres, in Candor, Tioga County. Staffed by six NYB volunteers, young aspiring outdoor enthusiasts were instructed and exposed to the many aspects of outdoor recreation. The success of this event expanded to other regions across the state and to date over 2000 young men and women have attended NYB Youth Ed Days (NYB-YED).
NYB-YED are provided at no cost to any boy or girl in New York State between the ages of 11 through 16. These training days may span between one, two or three days depending on Region. Although daily drop off and pick up is to be arranged by attendees, all food, equipment and related materials are provided by NYB. Experience is not necessary. Those who have their own archery gear are encouraged to bring it with them, however equipment will be provided to participants who do not already have their own gear.
NYS certified Bow Safety Instructors are present and as part of the curriculum, the bow safety course is given. Participants typically take their NYS bowhunter certification course, which will allow them to purchase their NYS bowhunting license when they reach 12 years of age
